Why?
I wrote Acupuncture and Cancer Survivorship: Recovery, Renewal and Transformation” because, as an acupuncturist and researcher, I have observed and systematically assessed the benefits cancer survivors may experience when they have acupuncture treatment. At its most powerful, acupuncture can be the catalyst for transformation and profound renewal. Over years of practice and research, I have heard innumerable cancer survivors tell me, “Acupuncture has given me my life back”.
I offer this book as a bridge between acupuncturists, biomedical healthcare professionals, researchers, and cancer survivors. My purpose in writing is twofold. First, I wish to raise awareness about the challenges of cancer survivorship amongst the community of acupuncture practitioners, whatever their style of acupuncture. Second, I believe acupuncture is a powerful tool that can improve the wellbeing and quality of life of cancer survivors, and I want to share my experience of working in this field from both evidence- and practice-based perspectives.

What?
Long-term cancer survivorship is a recent phenomenon. It requires all healthcare professionals to develop new methods to meet the needs of survivors. In this book, I present perspectives from biomedicine, east Asian medicine, acupuncture research, clinical experience, and case studies to provide a 360-degree perspective of the topics discussed.
As a guide for practitioners, my aim is to help acupuncturists to:
- Understand the challenges faced by cancer survivors who have completed treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy)
- Understand the biomedical context of the consequences of cancer treatments
- Relate their patient’s cancer experience to the principles of east Asian medicine
- Treat some specific consequences of cancer treatment
- Work safely with cancer survivors
- Support cancer survivors on an emotional level
- Help patients come to terms with a chronic condition and adjust to the “new normal”
- Manage expectations of both patient and practitioner
- Access the research that has been conducted in this field.
How?
How is this book unique? It is the first evidence-based, peer-reviewed book to focus on using acupuncture in cancer survivorship. It draws on nearly 25 years of experience of researching acupuncture in the supportive care of cancer survivors, and nearly 30 years of working with people living with and beyond cancer.
